Tesla last week updated its iPhone app with new Control Center controls on iOS 18. In addition, the latest version of the app added hidden code references to an upcoming Apple Watch version of the app, according to MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris.
The code indicates that it will be possible to use the Apple Watch as a digital key to remotely unlock compatible Tesla vehicles. Currently, this functionality is only available through unofficial, third-party Apple Watch apps on the App Store, and it has also been possible to use an iPhone as a Tesla car key for many years as well.
Earlier this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk seemed open to Tesla releasing an Apple Watch app, and the code confirms that development is underway. It is unclear when the app will be released, should it move beyond the internal development stage.

Only useful if you can unlock the Tesla with watch as standalone. Most ppl don’t have cellular on their Apple Watch.

FINALLY. we've been asking for this since literally 2015. Right now its just loser 3rd party apps that charge you a subscription and lag/are unresponsive because its calling the tesla server and not the actual car itself

If you use the app to unlock your Tesla, Elon will enter you in a drawing for US $1 million.

To be clear
- this is still app-based via BT
- this is NOT Wallet-based and does not leverage the CCC Digital Key standard via UWB/NFC
correct?

Alternative app already let me pair my apple watch as a regular bluetooth key, just like on the phone.
so tesla could definitely do the same.

I’m not buying a Tesla for various reasons. Not having car play is one , but mainly I just dislike musk.

I drove a 1964 Beetle years and years ago. Does that count?

Getting there. Just needs live activities for supercharging and for the widgets to not require the app to open and they’ll be up to date on the iOS ecosystem gimmicks for now…

I'm pretty sure the cars use Bluetooth. In fact the "walk away lock" feature locks the car when your Bluetooth phone is out of range. The car locks after you've walked perhaps 100 feet away. (or as soon as you turn off Bluetooth)
Of course, the entire car works with no cell signal, it is not needed for basic features. Yes I know I've used Tesla cars in places with zero-bars of cell service.
You would not need a cell-enabled watch

I already have this support with my Apple Watch as a digital key using Tessie. I use Tessie for its comprehensive logging features, and it's had Apple Watch support for at least a year or two. It will be nice to have it on the official watch app as well. But to be honest, it's a feature that I rarely use, as I have my phone on me 99% of the time. About the only time it comes in handy is when, at night, I might run downstairs to get something out of the car and forget that my iPhone is upstairs. Since I have my watch on, I can get in just the same.

I can't imagine buying a tesla in 2024. They're better looking and better quality vehicles to look at these days, to say nothing of Elon making a fool of himself.
Only admirable thing they've done lately is build a Watch app at a time where everyone else seems to be bowing out of that platform.
